Leela Sundaram

 Leela Sundaram is a classical soprano and violinist with a Bachelor of Music from the University of Florida. Leela began studying voice at the age of fourteen, studying privately and participating in the Sarasota Youth Opera. Over the past four years, Leela has been a member of the University of Florida’s Opera Theater. She performed in Bizet’s Carmen, portraying the roles of Laetitia in The Zoo (Arthur Sullivan) and Nella in Gianni Schicchi (Puccini). She also performed scenes from Médée (Cherubini), West Side Story (Bernstein), and King Arthur (Purcell). From 2021 to 2025, she was a soprano member of the University of Florida Concert and Chamber Choirs, performing works including Dvořák's Requiem, Op. 89, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. In June of 2023, Leela interned at the Sarasota Opera, gaining valuable professional experience and working with children ages 8-17 at the Sarasota Youth Opera’s summer camp. In July of 2023, she performed at the Festival of International Opera Italia in Urbania, Italy, portraying "La Conversa" in Puccini’s Suor Angelica, and completed the Italian Language for Opera course offered by Centro Studi Italiani, an intensive language program in Urbania, Italy tailored specifically for classical singers. Additionally, Leela gave her Junior Voice Recital in the spring 2024, featuring works by Fauré, Handel, Mozart, Strauss, Puccini, and Argento. She is a frequent performer at First United Methodist Church in Sarasota, Florida, and is the third-place winner of the Suncoast Music Competition in Sarasota. Apart from her vocal training, Leela is a trained classical violinist. She began studying violin privately at the age of eight and was a member of the Sarasota Youth Orchestra for eight years. During her academic career, she was a violinist in the University of Florida’s chamber string ensembles performing as first violin in works such as Haydn’s String Quartet op 33 no 3 'Bird'. Leela teaches voice, violin, and ukulele. Her teaching emphasizes vocal and instrumental technique along with basic music theory and performance skills.
